“Modeles” by Yureyev

Have you ever noticed how some guys have a thing for “girls in prison”? You can find all kinds of websites dedicated to it, and there have been several movies that played on this “particular fetish.” What is it about girls being locked up for offenses against society that turns some guys on? Well, this new series by Yureyev sheds a little light on the subject.

This photo series was shot in one of the old prisons of the old Soviet regime in the Ukraine. It was used to lock up political prisoners and dissidents, and it has since been shut down, practically torn down, opened up and turned into a kind of public park where flowers and grass, not prisoners, adorn the cells. Of course, some of the crumbling walls still stand, and they form the backdrop to this stunning shoot with two tender young models.

Looking through these photos, one gets a sense for what is so exciting about the “prison girl” motif. First off, when girls are in prison, they are obviously in a “needy and submissive” position. In other words, they’re in a state of need, a state in which they might be willing to offer various favors for various services necessary to them at the time…like getting extra food or better treatment…or even escaping. There’s a thrill element, and it shows in their eyes and body language.

Girls in prison also get very close to one another, and become more than just friends. Like men in prison forced to shift their erotic desires onto the only gender available to them, female prisoners become close in ways they might not have expected before they went in. Capturing this “intimacy by necessity” is a lot about what prison eroticism is about.

Finally, there is the age-old aesthetic trick of contrast. A girl in a prison is like a flower in a cage…it is sweeter because it is restricted by something so inimical to its nature. When you see a woman in prison, you feel a tinge of injustice. How could a woman ever do any wrong? Where the bars are hard, a woman is soft. Where the ground is cold, a woman is warm. And of course, one also imagines the desire one would feel for a woman if one were in prison and she were to be thrown in as well. What solace amidst such discomfort!

But these are all mere words. To really see what it is about “prison women,” you need merely take a look at this entire series and see how these girls touch and treat each other. It’s all, in the end, about that.
