Julia by Pasha
Photography isn’t always about capturing the whole picture. Sometimes, its power lies in the details it can conjure from the larger perspective. This new series by Pasha, entitled Julia, and featuring a new, stunning, lush model from Italy, is abundant evidence of the power of the close-up image, taking us, as it does, deeper into the spirit and physicality of the subject.
In a structural and technical sense, successful close-ups are largely about lighting. Going in tight on the model requires not only a different light – different in angle, brightness, and timber – but it requires light to accentuate a surface which, lacking the features one gets from a farther shot, can become bland and homogeneous. As always, the goal is diversity, and lighting is used to give the close-up shot dramatic power, which creates diversity of texture.
Fortunately for our viewing desires, Pasha is a renowned master at such techniques. And, fortunately for him, he has at his disposal for this particular shoot the incredible model, Julia, recently from Italy. Pasha uses her abundant and sensual features to create close-ups in a furtive light scheme that thrill the senses to their foundation.
In some of the shots, the chosen area of study is the face. The wide almond colored and shaped eyes; the high accentuated colorful cheekbones; the extravagant and wild-woman hair; and the lips, full and red and ripe as fresh baby pomegranates. Julia’s face is delved into by Pasha in a way that almost seems addictively obsessive, but the results are pure pleasure.
Sometimes Pasha will take a wider shot (for instance of the head, torso, and pelvic area), but using light and costume, he’ll give us entrance to only parts of these areas (such as the lower face, one breast, and the pubic ridge). The sensation here is one of enjoying the subject in a way that is both fantastical and realistic. In other words, you savor the view as it might appear in your dreams, and you also savor it as it might appear were you actually with the woman, moving with her in variants of light, removing parts of her wardrobe, playing with her, as it were.
And that is the power of Pasha, to bring us to a place that seems both incredibly familiar and surprisingly idealized. Just a look at the sample photos here can show you what he’s done with Julia. And what, may we ask, would you do with Julia?

From the Archives: Alla by Pasha
At the center of Pasha’s most recent masterpiece is the incredible model, Alla. She is the image of all things perfectly feminine and pure. The story begins with her lounging lazily on the bed, as if she has just woken up from a deep and satisfying dream. She then stands and poses in the corner of the room, almost as if to say that she has been startled by a frightening, yet, in the end, desired guest. Among the locals of the town, the artist was known as the madman. He could be seen working in his studio at all hours of the night, then, during the day, exhausted from his labors, he would sleep on the benches in the town square. Sometimes he would ask passers-by for coins so he could eat. Clearly, he was a little out of his mind.
But had these locals taken the time to peer in the windows late at night when he was at work, they would have seen that he was a little something more than just crazy – he was obsessed. And, to the objective eye, rightly so. True, he was obsessed with his own vision, but what a vision! A thing of pure ecstatic transporting beauty! Anyone with such a vision would certainly work as hard, if not harder, than the artist.
Were you, as we say, to look into that window, you would not only see him working, but you would see his tools of craft. His giant sculptor’s table, his spatula and his blade, his vats of clay, his wood and bronze for casting, his candles burnt down to the base, and, of course, his bottle of liquor. All there in service of his vision.
O, yes, the vision. What was it? Why did it possess him so? What could be so compelling that it could affect a man’s entire concept of space and time and self?
It was, of course, a woman. Or it could be a woman. For you see, the artist was actually working on the sculpture of a woman. A lifesize sculpture, done in the very shape of the woman of his dreams, with all the perfect features. The very woman that had haunted his fantasies for years, but now, because he was the artist, he had the power to recreate it, and, he hoped, make it live.
For that was his ultimate goal, that he should love the sculpture as he might a real woman, and through that love, it might become as a real woman. At least, he thought, real enough to satisfy him for the rest of his years. Do you think he’s crazy? Well, listen on.
Were you to be looking in on one particular night, the night, it so happens, when he was coming to the final etchings in the clay of his statue, and her final features were beginning to appear – long pendulous breasts with round perfect nipples, somewhat wide and roundish hips, perfect little toes, deep compelling eyes, the perfect ass and pudendum. He had her exactly as he wanted her, and at the minute she was done, he let out a muffled scream, and what happens next only he saw. She moved!
She moved and she reached out to him and she embraced him and gave him her love, the love of the created to the creator, of the thing to the mind, of the species to the ideal. The question is, can you tell which is which?
The rich girl comes from a very pampered background, full of servants, fast cars, and international travel.
