Shaping Beauty by Goncharov

In his ceramics and wood shop in Russia, the great photographer Goncharov watches as his models prance about, playing with his artistic tools. Contemplating their beauty, he begins to realize what it is that is so captivating about them. In their fine physiques they typify the three qualities held most dear by the great artists of antiquity – Resplendence, Proportion, and Graciousness.

Resplendence was a quality important to the ancient artists, and it meant that they could see the spirit shining through the form. When a figure displays resplendence, it literally glows with a certain kind of celestial light, imbuing the shape with light and openness. The models in this series definitely display resplendence. There is a brilliance to their glowing bodies that catches the eye and startles the heart.

Proportion referred to the dimensions and relations necessary to produce physical excellence. Of course, the ancients believed that reality was a mere manifestation of a higher form, existing, as it did, in the world of ideals. Therefore, proportion meant a certain relationship between the real body and the ideal body. And the models in this series typify this relationship. Their curves, their lines, their contours are all ideal, forming, as they do, ultimate images of feminine beauty.

Finally, Graciousness had as much to do with the way the figure looked as with how it “carried itself.” In other words, Graciousness was tied in with movement. It also referred to the subtle and generous way in which the figure offered itself to the eyes. There could be nothing abrupt, jarring, or out of sync. All had to fall in place, and with the models in this series, all does fall in place. Perfectly.

As Goncharov sat there looking at his models, these were his thoughts. He realized how perfectly they typified that ancient sense of aesthetic excellence. Their beauty was truly unearthly, beyond time, as innocent as nature herself. And what did the master do in response to such perfection? What else, but get his camera?

“Maille in Texas” by Michael White

As everyone around the world knows, Texas is legendary in its role in American history. The Alamo, the NASA Center at Houston, and, of course, its many presidents. Texas is a rugged, wild land, where cowboys and oilmen vie for power and “downhome” values are cherished. Also, as we mentioned last week, Texas is the home of “The Texas Girl,” that blonde, lovely, lively creation of Hollywood that has become an icon for feminine beauty.

In fact, the closest she’d ever come to being naked in anyone else’s presence other than her mama’s was in gym class with the other girls. But just having entered college, and looking for some adventure, she consented to showing her quite precious secrets to all of us, and we are definitely grateful for her kind and giving gesture.

What you’ll see of Maille in these 80 photos is an intimate portrayal of a very real, very natural young woman in the flower of her youth. She poses in a brightly lit white room, which is actually the corner room of her parents’ house (they weren’t home that afternoon). Either totally naked or in a red bikini strap panty, Maille is there in all her splendor for us to witness. At her side, on occasion, are some pretty pink flowers, or a white sheet, or you can see her bent over, reading a book called “The Girl in the Swing.” It makes you wonder what she’s thinking of, doesn’t it?

The most precious part of this photo series is just how close you get to Maille. She strikes a number of provocative poses – staring straight at the camera, her bounteous chest sticking out proudly; turning around with her derriere all plump and high; on all fours, squatting in a luxurious and suggestive position; or kneeling with her thighs open, her arms cupping her breasts together, biting her lip and staring eagerly at the lens. Suffice to say, you really get to know her in these photos. And getting to know Maille is a wonderful treat indeed.

Elle and Iris – Natural Glamour Nudes

There is generally a division in the world of erotic photography between “natural nudes” and “glamour nudes.” Photographers put themselves in one camp or another and sternly defend their position. Each side claims that the other fails to capture the true beauty of woman using their signature style.

However, a new series on Met-Art, entitled Elle and Iris, proves that the division between these two camps is easily bridged by a talented photographer. There is, after all, glamour in nature, and nature in glamour. The two can come together, and the results are often, as in this series, sexy and stunning.

Those who swear by the “natural nude” have a variety of qualities that they feel are essential to a perfect nude photo. The girl must not be “made-up” with anything artificial. The setting must seem simple and often rural. The lighting should give off a warmth that one can find without electric lighting, such as from the sun or from firelight. Finally, the models must have no surgical enhancements to their bodies. These qualities comes together to make a natural nude.

Those in the “glamour nude” camp feel differently. They feel that make-up or deluxe clothing is appropriate. They tend to choose settings that are somewhat more constructed or designed. They also use lighting of all kinds, though rarely natural lighting. Finally, their models are known for their surgically enhanced attributes.

Elle and Iris breaks down these divisions. While the girls appear natural, there is also something somewhat glamorous to them. They have a shine and a perfection that you can only find in a made-up model, but they also have an ease and an innocence that we think of in a more natural model. The setting is not out of doors, but it is not incredibly designed, either. The lighting is soft and elegant. There is one overwhelming question that pops into one’s mind when perusing a series from the great French master of photographic eroticism, J. Bourboulon – What kind of place is this? The settings are so pristine, perfect, and surreal in his photos, they’re almost more captivating than the models, if that is possible. To put it another way, the beauty of the landscape seems to provide an ideal surrounding in which the lovely models are set like precious diamonds in a casing.

Fact is, J. Bourboulon, for all the similarity of his sun-drenched settings, shoots his series all over the world. Some are in the French Riviera, where he keeps a home. Some are on the Southern Algarve coast of Portugal. Others are in Tahiti or the Bahamas. He has even shot on the shores of Japan.

In looking for a perfect location, Bourboulon prefers the kinds of environments one would dream about when contemplating a summer vacation in a locale full of beautiful girls. Resort beaches, eco-spots, sunbathing paradises that draw the cosmopolitan, upper class crowd. Places that make the people in them look better than they ever have.

What you notice in looking closely at his photos, however, is that they seem to be taking place in areas devoid of human traffic. Bourboulon actually goes into a lot of trouble to find very secluded, private areas in which to shoot. Of course, there’s also the trick of the camera. Some of his series take place on crowded nude beaches, only he removes the extras to highlight his chosen subject.

One common feature to all his spots is the light. It seems to shower the models with a kind of divine energy, accentuating their every inner mystery. Another feature is the purity of the natural environment. The water is always crystal clear, the sand pure and powdery, even the walls of the villas seem to shimmer with an almost futuristic bliss.

And in location is the secret to the kinds of models Bourboulon inevitably works with. He actually prefers indigenous girls, sprung from the soil of his chosen site. He goes to a place and recruits for a week or so, and then scouts out some locations. But there is always a match between girl and setting.

It’s work like this, and an attention to detail, that makes every Bourboulon a masterpiece worthy of the walls of any world-renowned museum.

This is a marvelous film, very long, and very sexy. In it we get to watch a totally captivating, lovely young model strip down completely and enjoy her body in the mirror. Koika – Orange by Slastyonoff

Koika is known among all her friends, and the photographers she works with, as a mischievous girl. She is always playing tricks, telling jokes, giggling at secrets. You can see it in her eyes, can’t you?

You can also see it in her photo series. How often do you see Koika pouting at the camera, looking over her shoulder, and pulling up her tiny skirt just far enough to let us see just the lower curve of her left buttock? Or when Koika pulls off her t-shirt in a movie to reveal the most perfect breasts the Good Lord ever made, does any model do it so slowly and with such sensuality, such tease, such incredible temptation? Yes, sir. Koika knows how to hold an audience.

In this series, however, she and her photographer, Slastyonoff, have joined forces to give us an impressive trompe l’oeil of erotic imagery. Trompe l’oeil is a French term meaning to fool, or deceive, the eye, and it is usually used to describe a painting that deceives the spectator into thinking that the objects in it are not what they seem. To successfully trick the eye of the viewer, trompe l’oeil artists us objects, situations, and compositional devices that offer a variety of symbols and levels.

The trompe l’oeil in this series is inherent in the title, Orange. Looking at these photos as an artistic rendition of a lineage of events, one must ask – what is happening? But more than that, one must ask – which is the “orange” in question? Which is the succulent fruit referred to in the title? Such a question would not be necessary did Koika and Slastyonoff offer us so many options.

There is, of course, the literal orange. Koika holds it in her hands, between her legs, against her lips. It is the only “color” in the pictures, besides her blue summer dress. Everything else is verging on white (beige, pink, light yellow). In that sense, it is the main symbol in the photos.

Looking further, however, we notice that there are several other “succulent fruits” in the image. Koika reveals these slowly, and Slastyonoff captures them in a riveting technique of show and conceal. There are Koika’s lips, which are as succulent as they come. They seem to have been covered with a glossy, sticky lip balm. Orange flavor, perhaps? There’s Koika’s hip, which she keeps showing off in such an aggressive manner. What is she trying to tell us? And then, of course, there is Koika’s most private succulent fruit, which makes several appearances in the light. So many fruits, so little time!
