Yana B: “Extreme” by Slastyonoff
Slastyonoff’s series of this Russian queen alludes to thrilling possibilities of power and bondage. As with so many of our Met Art exhibitions, though, the scene is left ambiguous. Our model’s body is unrivaled, her skin creamy and untouched, her breasts defying the most basic laws of physics.
Her voluptuous, innocent form is at odds with the out-fittings she wears: the black corset that binds her already too-slender waist; the chains that slip cruelly between the most tender parts of her legs; tracing the gentle softness of her buttocks, the flat muscles lining her navel; the spiked heels jailing her small feet; all seem somehow too much for a girl of such apparent innocence.
Who would keep her bound so? What would be the point? The silver links that underline her heavenly breasts seem an insult to the beauty above them. The matching chains that snake between her thighs are no less friendly. This lovely beauty should not need to be controlled. This charming doll, her brunette hair thick and natural and wild, her pale skin pure and unblemished, should not need to be kept bound in such unforgiving contraptions. What is happening here? What has brought this nameless creature to be involved in such a strange situation?
The photographs, with Slastyonoff’s skill, provide a possible answer.
Look into this girl’s eyes. She is not as innocent as her youthful body would have you believe. We mused earlier about the connection between this essay and the theme of power, and it is here, in the lovely anonymous model’s gaze, that we find the joint of this coupling. Our sweet innocent is not a victim to any captor. No one has demanded that she garb herself in this way. Rather, it is she who has so empowered her body.
She knows full well the effects of the contrast she’s created, the way the leather looks, tight against her skin, the feel of the cold chains between her heated legs. She presses herself against both, arching her small body to feel the pressure of both metal and leather, pulling her own hair in the trill of her own excitement, and using the links of her outfit to accentuate her own breasts: she knows full well her allure, and is almost carried away with the strength of her own newly discovered sensuality.
We do not know why she’s chosen to dress this way. We do not know whether it was through some attempt to rein in her overpowering erotic desires, or whether she had seduction in mind. Not that it matters: we’re sure you love the results.
